California Legalizes Same Sex Marriage- Is Florida Next?

(Orlando, FL) May 15, 2008.  Today, the California Supreme Court through a raw act of judicial activism, imposed same sex marriage upon the people of California by striking down Proposition 22, a state marriage law similar to Florida's marriage law.   It was enacted by and expressed the will of the voters which defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  in Florida, this decision highlights the compelling need to pass the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment to allow Florida citizens and not unelected judges to arbitrarily decide the definition of marriage.  Instead of being restrained by its limited role as an academic interpreter of law, the California high court violated the will of the people and assumed the posture of a radical social change agent.

By a 4-3 vote, the court held that the marriage laws between a man and a woman was "sexual orientation discrimination" and ordered that all references to gender and the words "man and woman" are to be removed from every law.  The court also ruled that there was a fundamental right to form family relationships. This so-called "right" the court found now throws the door open to other forms of aberrant family structures including polygamy and group marriages.

This is precisely why Florida needs to vote YES on Amendment 2 to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  Our opponents, the stealth homosexual group Red and Blue, have been disingenuously arguing that same sex marriage is already illegal in Florida an therefore Amendment 2 is not necessary.  This California decision is "Exhibit A" for why Florida needs to protect marriage on November 4, 2008 by voting "yes" on Amendment 2.  The threat of judicial activism is real and Floridians need to understand that this same scenario could easily happen in Florida.

Yes2Marriage.org calls upon all Floridians to renew their commitment to the institution of marriage and to consider a more serious commitment to doing their part in passing Amendment 2 to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman on November 4, 2008.
